Baseball, Heritage, and the Journey Home

IABS member Gene Courtney reflects on baseball, his connection to Ireland, and the induction of Joe Mauer into the Irish American Baseball Hall of Fame.

My journey has taken me a long way from a lonely early life in East St. Louis, Illinois. Through those challenging years, I remained proud of my Irish heritage, and baseball became an unexpected foundation for acceptance, friendship and integration.

On the baseball field, backgrounds mattered less than ability, attitude, and — most importantly — being part of a team. The game offered a sense of belonging that would remain with me throughout my life.

Good fortune eventually brought me a wonderful wife and family, and together we enjoyed opportunities to live and travel throughout the United States and abroad. Wherever life took us, one constant remained: a lifelong love of baseball.

Moving as an adult to live in Ireland, my many years of association with youth baseball in America eventually led me to the Irish American Baseball Society. Through that connection, baseball and heritage became intertwined in ways I could never have imagined.

Recently, advanced age dictated that we forego our beloved home in County Cork and return to Minnesota. Though taking leave of Ireland was painful, baseball remained a constant source of friendship and connection, allowing me the privilege of maintaining relationships around the world.

Those connections became especially meaningful this August when I had the pleasure of meeting Joe Mauer — a St. Paul baseball legend with proud Irish roots — and Shaun Clancy, founder of the Irish American Baseball Hall of Fame, at Mauer’s induction into that Hall.

Meeting Mauer was about far more than meeting one of Minnesota’s greatest baseball stars. To me, it represented the coming together of important parts of my own journey: Ireland, Minnesota, youth baseball, and the Irish American baseball community.

Standing on the field in Minnesota for Mauer’s induction, I found myself reflecting on how far the journey had taken me. From East St. Louis to Ireland and Minnesota, through years of involvement in youth baseball and the Irish American Baseball Society, baseball has been the constant thread.

It was a reminder that baseball is much more than a game. It can connect people, preserve heritage and make any place feel like home.
