John Fitzgerald, Founder

Documentary filmmaker John Fitzgerald released, “The Emerald Diamond” in 2006. The film told the story of baseball in Ireland from the early 1990s to 2005. At the time, this was the only known existence of baseball in Ireland. Since the film’s release, we have been able to uncover the existence of baseball in Ireland as far back as the late 19th century.

“The Emerald Diamond” was screened in theaters across the US and Ireland, culminating in an award-winning trip to the Baseball Film Festival at the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum in Cooperstown, NY.

“Everywhere I went to show the film, people wanted to help the cause,” explained Fitzgerald. “Unfortunately, there was no organization set up to let people make a donation or even to just sign up for email updates on the progress of baseball in Ireland. So I decided to make that organization a reality.”

Following a year on the road, Fitzgerald returned home to New York where he formed Emerald Diamond USA, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization with a mission to support baseball programs in Ireland. Within a few years, the organization was renamed the Baseball United Foundation.

Baseball United and the Irish American Baseball Society

Over time, Baseball United’s programs have expanded throughout the United States and the world, but our programs in Ireland remains an important part of our work. In 2017, Fitzgerald formed Ireland’s first Under-18 Junior National Baseball Team, which won the first gold medal in the history of Ireland’s National Baseball Team program.

In 2018, Fitzgerald and the Baseball United Foundation’s Board of Directors, several of whom were former players on Ireland’s Men’s National Baseball Team, formed the Irish American Baseball Society.
