Team Ireland Roster Breakdown

The Irish American Baseball Society, along with our parent organization, the Baseball United Foundation, is proud of our role in assisting several players on the team in recent years. Here’s a quick rundown of some of the players on the roster that we’ve worked with:

Patrick Dillon: SS

Patrick Dillon joined Team Ireland as the starting shortstop on the 2017 18U Irish Junior National Baseball Team. Patrick’s slick fielding and timely hitting was a big part of Ireland’s undefeated gold medal performance that year. Patrick returned to the 18U team in 2018 and he joined the Irish Men’s National Baseball Team in 2019. Patrick currently plays at Trinity College in Connecticut.

Fionn Gallahar-Hall: 2B

Fionn Gallaher-Hall came to America in 2018, as part of the Baseball United Foundation’s Baseball Exchange Program. Fionn attended a Nike Baseball Camp in Dobbs Ferry, NY, where he spent one week honing his skills with top local coaches at Mercy College. Here’s a video of Fionn after getting off the plane in NYC:

Mitch Hillert: Pitcher

Mitch Hillert joined Team Ireland in 2018 as part of Ireland’s first gold medal-winning team at the Men’s level. Mitch currently pitches professionally in Germany. Check out this video of Mitch talking to Shaun Clancy and John Fitzgerald about pitching in Europe, representing Ireland, and more:

Brian McAuliffe: 3B

Brian McAuliffe was another key member of Team Ireland’s 2018 gold medal team. Baseball United assisted with recruiting Brian and helping him through the process of applying for Irish citizenship, which he claimed through his grandfather. In his first tournament for Ireland, Brian hit .647 with 11 runs batted in and was named Player of the Tournament. Brian currently plays for Dennison University.

Ryan O’Rourke: P

Ryan O’Rourke is a former MLB pitcher who pitched for the Twins and Mets. For his career, O’Rourke had 56 appearances and an ERA of 4.84. Click here to watch a video of Ryan talking about getting his Irish citizenship and a chance to represent Ireland at the 2019 European B-Pool Qualifying Tournament.

Sean Scanlon: SS/P

Sean joined the Irish 18U team in 2018 after being recruited by 18U coach Gary O’Connor and assisted in the citizenship process by Baseball United. Sean led team Ireland that year with a .600 batting average and by pitching four scoreless innings.

Liam Shier: 1B

In 2014, Liam Shier was the first player to come to America as part of Baseball United’s Baseball Exchange Program. Liam spent a week in New York and Rhode Island, playing games, training with top coaches, and he even visited Yankee Stadium and MLB Network! Liam was also an inaugural member of the Irish 18U team in 2017.

Congratulations to this year’s team and good luck in Slovakia!
