Lefty O’Doul was inducted into the Irish American Baseball Hall of Fame on May 10, 2024. The ceremony took place prior to the San Francisco Giants’ Irish Heritage Night game at Oracle Park. The induction was presented to Lefty’s cousin, Tom O’Doul, by Irish Baseball Ambassador Paul Cunnie, and was overseen by Consul General Micheál Smith.

O’Doul was one of the top hitters of his era, winning two batting titles and retiring with a lifetime .349 batting average. After retiring from baseball as a player, he became one of the most successful managers in Pacific Coast League history and pivotal figure in the development of baseball in Japan.

Despite his Irish-sounding last name,  O’Doul’s Irish roots are actually traced back to his maternal grandmother, Catherine Fitzgerald, who hailed from County Limerick, Ireland.

O’Doul was nominated and selected by a vote of members of the Irish American Baseball Society. The other 2024 inductees are Danny Murtaugh, Jack Curry, Brian Kenny, and Wade Boggs.

Following the induction of Lefty O’Doul, Irish American Baseball Society member John Donohue was named the recipient of the first Lefty O’Doul Lifetime Achievement Award, for his contributions to the sport of baseball and his work in the San Francisco Irish American community.

Coach Donohue coached Lowell High School for 33 years. His lifetime 735 wins ranks #7 in California HS history. Over the course of his storied career, Coach Donohue has won 14 CIF Section Championships and has received numerous awards and honors on a local, regional, and national level. He is a member of the San Francisco Prep Hall of Fame and the California Coaches Association Hall of Fame.
