Remembering Pete Rose
In reply to a question from IABS member Bernard Connaughton, Steve recalled the moment when Pete Rose broke Ty Cobb’s hit record on September 11, 1985, in a game against the San Diego Padres. As the Padres first baseman, Steve had a front row seat for the occasion.
“I was close with Pete,” he said, recalling how they both aimed for 200 hits in a season. He described the emotional scene when Rose achieved the milestone, recalling, “I’ve never seen Pete so emotional.” Garvey also said that he taught his sons to play by showing them videos of Rose’s hustle and focus.
Memories of Fernando Valenzuela
Garvey also took a moment to pay tribute to the late Fernando Valenzuela, who passed away earlier this year. He shared a story from Valenzuela’s rookie season, recalling how the young southpaw nearly hit him in the head with an incredible pickoff move to first base.
Garvey emphasized Valenzuela’s legacy, stating, “He had a much more significant influence on the culture of Dodger Stadium and society itself.” He recognized how Valenzuela helped embrace baseball within the Latino community, ultimately transforming the fan demographic at Dodger Stadium.
Advice for Young Players and Families
Garvey spoke to members of the Green Sox Baseball program, sharing his insights for young players and their families navigating the journey from Little League to high school and college baseball. He encouraged families to cherish the memories created through the game. He also spoke about how baseball connects families and cultivates growth in children.
In closing, Garvey, who is a proud member of the Irish American Baseball Society and the Irish American Baseball Hall of Fame, reiterated his committment to help Ireland reach the World Baseball Classic and reminded us of the timeless nature of baseball and its ability to foster connections, celebrate heritage, and create lasting memories.
