Giants Manager Will Be Honored at Irish Heritage Night in San Francisco
San Francisco, CA (May 27, 2025) – San Francisco Giants manager Bob Melvin will be inducted into the Irish American Baseball Hall of Fame on June 6 at Oracle Park. Melvin, whose grandmother Mary Dolan was born in County Cavan, Ireland, will be inducted prior to the Giants Irish Heritage Night game against the Atlanta Braves.
“My Irish grandmother would be so proud of this honor,” said Melvin. “She was an important influence in my childhood and it’s because of her that I consider myself a proud Irish American.”
Melvin was born in Palo Alto and grew up in Menlo Park. He played baseball at Menlo-Atherton High School and the University of California, Berkeley. He played ten seasons in the major leagues — including stints with the Tigers, Giants, Orioles, Royals, Red Sox, White Sox, and Yankees — before moving into scouting and coaching roles.
He served as the bench coach for the 2001 World Champion Arizona Diamondbacks and he made his managerial debut in 2003, leading the Seattle Mariners to a 93-win season. Since then, he has established himself as one of the top managers in the game, winning three Manager of the Year awards. He is one of only six managers to win the Manager of the Year Award in both the American and National League.
“Bob Melvin is an accomplished manager and a fantastic ambassador for the game of baseball,“ said Irish American Baseball Hall of Fame Founder Shaun Clancy. “When we learned of his strong Irish roots, he was a logical choice for induction into the Irish American Baseball Hall of Fame.”

The Irish American Baseball Hall of Fame was started in 2008 by Shaun Clancy. The “Irish Hall” was located inside Clancy’s iconic New York City restaurant, Foley’s NY, until 2020. It was relaunched in 2022, as part of the Irish American Baseball Society. Clancy remains the key force behind the Hall, serving as President Emeritus.
